MPR News Podcast, “74 Seconds,” Wins a Peabody Award

Saint Paul, Minn., April 24, 2018 – MPR News has received a George Foster Peabody Award for its in-depth reporting captured in the podcast, 74 Seconds. The award is the highest honor in broadcast media and is the fourth Peabody Award for MPR News and the tenth for American Public Media Group.

74 Seconds tells the story of a July 2016 traffic stop that ended with the world watching a man’s final moments live on their phones. It is the story of that man, Philando Castile, and the officer who was tried for his death, Jeronimo Yanez. Through comprehensive reporting, MPR News examined this intersection of race, policing, justice and safety in America.

With this story, MPR News took the unusual approach of covering a trial in real time on the radio, online and through a podcast. To date, the podcast has nearly 2 million downloads.
